Are loyalty campaigns planned only for discounts?

A hand holds a blue Tesco Clubcard beneath the dunnhumby logo and text about a successful loyalty program.

Are they a waste of your resources?

To find out, let us talk about one of the most successful loyalty programs in the world.

I'll keep it short (as always), okay?

This is about Clive Humby and Edwina Dunn => founders of dunnhumby

They proposed a loyalty card program to Tesco called "Tesco Clubcard".
This was launched in 1995.

When the chairman of Tesco (Lord MacLaurin) first saw the detailed customer data reports generated by the Clubcard,
he famously remarked

"𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐈 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 30 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬."

This realization highlights the potential of data analytics in retail. You can personalize marketing, optimize inventory, and tailor the shopping experience to individual customers. Otherwise, every customer is just a number.

Every business is different. Understanding and leveraging your customer data can help you leapfrog your competitors.
